The digital downloads of the original Pokémon games have been released today. Owners of a Nintendo 3DS, 2DS, or 3DS XL are able to go to the Nintendo Shop, and purchase games from the original trilogy – Red, Blue, and Yellow.

The pricing of these games is confirmed at £8.99 each, and the games are slightly altered to make use of the wireless technology that the latest generation of handhelds possess, eliminating the need for a Link Cable, and adding a new realm of possibility for compatibility with future generations, such as the recently announced Pokémon Sun and Moon games.

The original games were intially just Pokémon Red and Green in Japan, where after huge commercial success, Pokémon was exported to the United States of America, where it exploded in popularity, spawning the creation of Pokémon Yellow, which was designed to stick more closely to the story of the anime protagonist Ash Ketchum, and his journey with the now-series mascot, Pikachu.

These games have been hotly anticipated since their announcement in November, and needless to say, millions of Pokémon fans all across the world have been up since the small hours reliving some of the greatest memories of their childhoods.
