The UCLan Rams secured their place in the division play-offs, after a comfortable victory over Sheffield Sabres, continuing their unbeaten run this season.
The home side made a fast start to the game with a touchdown in the opening ten minutes by quarterback Eden Beesley, which was then converted to give the Rams an early 7-0 lead.
Sheffield looked to hit back immediately but their attack was foiled in the Rams’ 32 with a turnover on the Sabres’ 4th down.
As UCLan mounted another attack, they gained more ground but were unsuccessful in their attempt to score a field goal.
The Sabres looked to respond in the 2nd quarter but this was dealt with by some important tackles from Steven Czarnecki and a nice pick by centre Dale Spence.
Another Sabres offensive saw a well worked short pass offloaded, before a 40-yard run brought the Yorkshire side into the Rams 11.
Despite Sheffield’s progress down the field, the Rams held a 10-0 lead at the end of the first half after some good defensive work by Fernando Huang and a final crunching tackle by Czarnecki.
Into the second half, Sheffield’s kick-off was immediately charged down by Spence who forced them to start on their own 10, before another attempt to try and score was dealt with by Czarnecki who forced another turnover.
Beesley then looked to have put the game beyond Sheffield’s reach when he scored a second touchdown for the Rams after a nice run from the Sheffield 15, followed by a successful conversion, giving UCLan a 17-0 lead.
The gap between the sides increased further heading into the final quarter, Beesley completing his hat-trick of touchdowns after a 35-yard run from Joe Nic, putting UCLan 23-0 up.
Adam Bamber scored another touchdown into the final quarter after catching Beesley’s 15-yard pass before a Sheffield safety, which saw the end of the match with UCLan emerging as 31-0 victors.
In just under a fortnight, the Rams will look to replicate their fine performance against Huddersfield Hawks at the UCLan Sports Arena.
