CORBYN’S SHADOW CABINET CRISIS – PART EIGHT

By Joe Young - Politics Editor

Resigned: Shadow Education Secretary Lucy Powell (Top Right)

Next to go was Lucy Powell, Shadow Education Secretary.

Powell, MP for Manchester Central, said to Corbyn:

“I do not have the confidence that you can bring the party together, lead us to a general election and be an effective opposition.”

She is the latest in a swathe of Shadow Cabinet Members to resign, and has also posted her letter of resignation on social networking site Twitter:

Her resignation is particularly interesting as next year, Greater Manchester has their first elections for the directly-elected Mayor. Her resignation may go one of two ways – a more centrist candidate will be selected in protest of Corbyn, or a hardcore Corbynite could be selected to rally support for the Labour Leader.
