Justin Bieber has announced that he is finally ‘in control’ of his career after he has made the decision to start writing his own music. Bieber, 21, claims ‘I was really young and I had people telling me what to record giving me songs and stuff.’ He now has the opportunity to work on his own music through a self-made project. But will it make a difference? Will this give it more authenticity? It seems that most artist these days are just chasing the lime light of former artist’s imagery or style.
Lady Gaga, for example, has had huge success over the last couple of years and is renounced for her ‘quirky’ and image of being different. But in comparison to past female singers, she seems to just be a poor man’s Madonna or Debbie Harry.
Musicians have been doing well through corporate shows such as X Factor: One Direction being one of the main names. Being told what to do, how to dress and how to come across by Simon Cowell has done them well. I mean, look at the charts and they’re plastered all over it. Nevertheless, they’re the same generic nonsense that we are used to hearing, day in and day out through the boyband regime!
So when was the last ‘original’ popular music act? The answer is I don’t even remember unfortunately. Being repetitive shows clear success and pretty easy as the songs are the same, the bands are the same and the managers are the same.
So with the fact that Bieber has decided to do an album where apparently no one tells him what to do and it’ll be all his own work put in, my question is how similar will it be to his old material? I mean, I doubt he is going to change his entire style because let’s be honest without a marketing team behind him, I can’t imagine him to be creative enough.
For me, a band that does have originality is Arctic Monkeys, each album has a different sound so you just don’t quite know what they’re going to come out with next and the buzz of hearing a new sound instead of the same old stuff never gets boring!
