Foodie Friday: 3 Monkeys

3By Andy Hall – Reporter

During term time the 3 Monkeys is always busy to the point where I don’t think I’ve ever walked past it and it not have customers queueing. I’m generally a rather boring sandwich man so I was apprehensive about broadening my horizons but what a great little sandwich bar 3 Monkeys is. It has a small seating area for three or so people but then it is a very small café so it clearly is making the best of the space available.

Chalk boards above the serving counter tell you exactly how to approach your sandwich situation, namely you pick your bread (wrap, baguette, bap etc) or rice and peas, then you choose your filling and finally your salad (huge range of salad choices). I went for a steak baguette with onions and special sauce and my wife had the Wildfire Jerk Chicken with rice and peas. The food is fresh and cooked while you wait and apart from tasting absolutely delicious is ridiculously cheap. £3 for a large portion of chicken and rice and £3 for a packed baguette is excellent, especially considering how tasty it all is. Apparently owned by the same people who run Coco’s restaurant, the food appears to be a blend of Caribbean and Turkish influences.

We didn’t have to wait long for our food however while we were waiting I spotted one of the servers continuously cleaning down the counter area which is always reassuring. Other reviews have highlighted lack of manners with the serving staff however I must say in my experience the gents behind the counter were polite and friendly. Our food including two drinks came to £8 which we thought was a bargain. We decided to sit by the church and eat which was lovely however you could eat in (if there’s space) or take it away.

The 3 Monkeys special sauce deserves a special mention; I have no idea what is in it but it was excellent and added some great flavours to my sandwich, of course there is a large range of other sauces available also.

We were really impressed by the 3 Monkeys and can completely understand why it is always so busy, I’m certainly looking forward to going back and trying other sandwiches with other fillings. If you’re after a great sandwich for a great price then I absolutely recommend 3 Monkeys. Spot on.
