Foodie Friday : Simon Dunn Chocolatier

Located on Friargate street, this handsome little café-come-chocolate shop offers visitors a clean and relaxing environment to sample the usual warm or cold drinks but Simon Dunn Chocolatier’s usp (hence the name) is their great range of chocolate based hot drinks and variety of chocolate treats to eat alongside.

I visited the café on a Thursday afternoon with some work colleagues to enjoy a rare spot of sunshine that we seem so sorely to be lacking lately. The shop has seating outside for around 8 – 10 people and inside can cater for approximately 10 – 12 seated. The décor is bright and clean with an attractive counter area displaying the menus and the chocolates. The staff member who served us was friendly and approachable; importantly as I was visiting with some of the people I work with, (Adults with Learning Disabilities) I always find it incredibly endearing when staff members feel comfortable enough to treat my colleagues as normal as anyone else in the shop.

THE DRINKS

chocHaving visited before I can comfortably say the chocolates and chocolate based drinks are fabulous. If you don’t have a sweet tooth then I’d suggest sticking to your everyday warm drinks because the hot chocolate with extra chocolates takes even the most sweet-toothed veteran to another level. On this visit I stuck to a ‘Chocolate Shot with Marshmallows’ which consisted of a 50ml shot glass filled to the brim with warm, thick melted chocolate. It could be described as milk chocolate but it was definitely far richer than your mass-manufactured chocolate you find in the local shop. It was a complete delight actually. For £1.50 I was expecting a rather poor melted chocolate dessert but the quantity and quality was second to none.

The shop offers a range of hot chocolates (from dark to white) along with a variety of coffee options and of course the individual chocolates to eat alongside. They’re not incredibly cheap but then I’d suggest they are alongside Thornton’s prices and in my opinion are of far better quality. The service is quick and efficient although be warned they don’t have a card machine so make sure to take cash.

While Summer may be on it’s way out, or even waving at us from next year, I would highly recommend popping in on a cold and blustery day, taking some required reading (because as Students we’ve always got plenty of that) and whiling the day away with some wonderful hot chocolate.
