Having recently performed his 1443rd gig since 2004 and announced a 2014 UK arena tour, we asked one of the hardest working men in music, Frank Turner, a few questions.
Losing Days is the third single from your album Tape Deck Heart, what’s the story behind the song?
It’s a song about growing up, the passage of time, how life starts to slip away from you quicker as you get older. Cheery stuff.
You recently announced that your new EP, Losing Days, would include a Biffy Clyro cover. Is there any song that you’ve not covered that you’d love to?
Sure, hundreds. I’m a singer songwriter. There’s two components to that phrase. I do loads of covers, it’s not actually that big a deal for me, I like to learn songs that I enjoy and sing them out here and there. If I’m going to record it, it needs to have a different spin on it to the original.
The video for Losing Days features you getting a tattoo, of the many that you have is there one in particular that means the most?
They all have a lot of meaning to me, otherwise I wouldn’t get them done. The lucky 13 I have on my right middle finger is probably my
favourite individual piece.
Many people have your lyrics tattooed on them. How does it make you feel that your lyrics mean so much to people?
At first I was a little weirded out by it, but then I considered the fact that I have a fair few music / band related tattoos myself, so it does make sense to me. I guess I just don’t think of myself in the same bracket as Townes Van Zandt or Black Flag or whatever.
You’ve played a number of festivals this summer, many of which you’ve played before (including 2000 Trees & Reading/Leeds) What is it about these festivals that keeps you coming back?
The fact that they keep booking me to play!
Who would you say is the best festival performer?
I’m not sure about the overall best, but Skindred at Reading this year were pretty incredible.
Finally, is there one artist that you’d love to collaborate with that you haven’t yet?
