3rd Year Musical Theatre student, Tom Townsend, has secured an audition with the musical maestro himself, Andrew Lloyd Webber. Tom, who is also the Chair of the Musical Theatre Society, found out the news in early April to which he received confirmation he had been put forward for the Andrew Lloyd Webber Foundation Scholarship by The London School of Musical Theatre and is set to audition for Andrew and his team next month in London.
The Andrew Lloyd Webber Foundation funds only 10 new Musical Theatre course scholarships each year at renowned musical theatre colleges from across the UK. The London School of Musical Theatre (LSMT) is widely recognised as unique in its approach. Its ethos is to create the environment of a professional company in rehearsal rather than that of an educational institution. Only an exclusive number of entrants are accepted each year.
Pluto managed to squeeze a quick chat with Tom, in between his performances in the production of ‘Candide,’ about his upcoming audition.
How are you feeling about being asked to audition?
I just feel so overwhelmed to have received this opportunity! It’s such a fantastic thing to be put forward for and it really has been the icing on the cake for what has already been a fantastic year for me!
If you’re successful, what would this mean to you?
If I was lucky enough to receive the scholarship it would mean the absolute world to me! Funding drama school is an extremely difficult thing to do as it is so expensive and coming from a background in which my family are not very wealthy it is hard. However – my family are doing all they can to help me which is also really nice to have behind me!
How are you feeling about the audition?
I am extremely excited about the audition! But of course nerves are always there no matter what I do as a performer! I’m more nervous to be singing in front of Andrew Lloyd Webber himself and meeting him! ARGH – but I’m sure I will always look back on the experience and be very thankful for it!
Tom’s audition is due to take place in London on Saturday 7th May.
