A recent online campaign for Queen Elsa in Frozen to have a girlfriend in its sequel has sparked online debate. Should there be more LGBT+ characters in Disney films?
Although there has been a range of speculation online about possible gay characters, especially Oaken from Frozen, there is yet to be an openly LGBT+ character in these animated children’s films.
With the move towards far greater acceptance in society for non-heterosexual relationships, perhaps it is time we see this expanding to popular culture.
This would be a bold move for such a company to do. Many of its films are centred on love stories and relations between princes and princesses, which means the storylines would have to take a very different approach.
Fans are calling for Disney to make Elsa a lesbian in Frozen 2, with a choice tweet reading “#GiveElsaAGirlfriend because LGBT kids deserve to know that there is nothing wrong with them”
With the popularity of Queen Elsa as a royal character associated with no romantic love, this may have already started to happen.
