Happy 20th Birthday, Pokémon!

Today marks the 20th birthday of one of the world’s most loved video game franchises! To celebrate, here’s a brief rundown of the last twenty years of gaming!

1996: Pokémon Red and Green are released in Japan

1997: The Pokémon anime airs for the first time

1998: Pokémon Red and Blue are released in North America. The Pokémon anime airs in North America too.

1999: Pokémon Yellow and Pokémon Pinball released. The Pokémon Trading Card Game is launched. Pokémon: The First Movie is released.

2000: Pokémon Gold and Silver are released. Pokémon: The Movie 2000 is released.

2001: Pokémon 3: The Movie is released. Pikachu features in Super Smash Bros Melee. Pokémon Crystal is released.

2002: The Pokémon Master Quest TV series launches, as does the Pokémon 4 Ever movie.

2003: Pokémon Ruby and Sapphire are released.

2004: The first remakes in the Series, Fire Red and Leaf Green, are released. The first Pokémon Trading Card Game World Championship takes place. Pokémon Heroes: The Movie is released.

2005: Pokémon Emerald is released. The new anime series Pokémon: Advanced Battle airs for the first time.

2006: The games Pokémon Mystery Dungeon: Red Rescue Team, and Blue Rescue Team are released, as is Pokémon Ranger. Pokémon goes on a tour of America to celebrate its 10th birthday. The film Pokémon: Lucario and the Mystery of Mew is released.

2007: The Pokémon Diamond and Pearl games, anime, and trading cards are released.

2008: The games Pokémon Mystery Dungeon: Explorers of Time, and Explorers of Darkness are released, as is Pokémon Ranger: Shadows of Almia. The film Pokémon: The Rise of Darkrai is released.

2009: The Pokémon Platinum game and trading cards are released, as is the tie-in film Pokémon: Giratina & the Sky Warrior.

2010: The remakes Pokémon HeartGold and SoulSilver are released, and introduce the Pokéwalker, a new fitness device.

2011: The Pokémon Black and White games are released, as are the tie-in trading cards.

2012: The creatively named games Pokémon Black 2, and White 2, are released, as is the movie Pokémon: Kyurem and the Sword of Justice.

2013: Pokémon explores the Kalos region with the games Pokémon X and Y.

2014: The remakes Pokémon Omega Ruby, and Alpha Sapphire, are released.

2015: The Hoopa and the Clash of Ages trading cards are released.

2016: The Pokken Tournament game (a Tekken tie-in) is scheduled for release. Pokémon Go, a real world interactive game, is scheduled for release. The BreakPoint trading cards will be released.
