[INTERVIEW] Director John Wojturski (Jeff, The Monster)

Caitlin Mclaren

The buzz around campus gets louder as Jeff, The Monster opens Wednesday night! Pluto has spoken to John Wojturski as he takes on his debut directorial role and how it feels to be the newly elected Chair of the Drama Society.

Where did the inspiration come from?

I love how horror films often take themselves too seriously, Jason Voorhees is a terrifying murderer, but what does he do in his spare time? Just like me or you, he faces everyday life. Does he sleep? Where? I thought those kind of questions gave a great starting point for a story and to explore these types of characters from a different perspective.

How has it been working with your cast and crew?

Fantastic. I’ve been overwhelmed by the enthusiasm, positive attitude and commitment by each of them, I couldn’t thank them enough.

What have you taken from your experience as director?

It’s helped me develop the skills to approach a large project, I’ve developed my leadership, time-management and team work skills.

Would you direct again?

One hundred percent. It’s been a fantastic experience. Hopefully I’ll get the opportunity again at some point next year.

Have you achieved the goals that you set yourself as director?

Thanks to the hard work from my cast and crew, I’ve surpassed them. I wanted to create a fun play for Drama Society members to be a part of and for the audience to enjoy. This is my first play and I appreciate all the hard work that’s been done, so I would like to be able to give back. We’re doing so by donating 10% of the profits to the Alzheimer Society Charity. You can check the charity out by clicking here.

Can we expect anything from you in the future?

I’ll be chair of the society next year, so initially I’ll be taking a step back from directing and concentrating on creating more opportunities to offer. We want to expand on the acting for film part of the society and we’re beginning improv’ sessions with the objective of creating monthly improv’ shows at a local Preston venue.
