The Sunday Mirror yesterday claimed that Labour MP and former Minister for Europe, Keith Vaz, has allegedly booked male escorts to a flat owned near London.

Vaz, who chairs the Home Affairs Select Committee – a committee to scrutinise the activities of the Home Office – issued the following statement of resignation from his chairmanship:

“I am genuinely sorry for the hurt and distress that has been caused by my actions in particular to my wife and children.
“I will be informing the Committee on Tuesday of my intention to stand aside from chairing the sessions of the Committee with immediate effect.”
He also issues a statement saying that he’d referred the issue to his solicitors:
“It is deeply disturbing that a national newspaper should have paid individuals to have acted in this way.
“I have referred these allegations to my solicitor Mark Stephens of Howard Kennedy who will consider them carefully and advise me accordingly.”
Vaz, who has a wife and two children, was commended for his resignation from former Culture Secretary John Whittingdale.
