Laura Massaro, who lives in Chorley started the year at the top of the Professional Squash Association rankings.

After a poor start to 2015 she took a five week break from the sport and dropped out of the top four.

However, she finished 2015 in spectacular fashion by going on a 14-match unbeaten run and picking up the Qatar Classic, Macau Open and US Open titles along the way.

Massaro becomes the second woman to top the rankings since 2006 in an era dominated by David.

Massaro told BBC Sport: “”Having already won a British Open and a World Championship, it was probably the last box to tick, so for me it is absolutely massive.

“As number one, my level is obviously the best in the world at the moment and I just have to try and keep improving, so other people are looking at me as though that’s where we need to be and who we need to catch.”
