Match preview: PNE v Leeds United

By Jack Wynne – Sports Editor

The final match of the season sees one of Simon Grayson’s former teams, Leeds United, travel to Deepdale tomorrow afternoon.

North End suffered a narrow 1-0 defeat in the reverse fixture just before Christmas last year, Alan Browne turning the ball into the back of his own net.

United have won two out of their last five games away from home whilst Preston have picked up three out of a possible 15 points during the last five matches at Deepdale.

PNE manager Simon Grayson thinks there will be a good atmosphere when the two sides meet and he wants his players to capitalize on this.

Grayson admits that Leeds will feel they have underachieved this season and expects them to try and finish the season on a high.

A “best-of-the-season performance” is what Leeds United manager Steve Evans has asked for ahead of tomorrow’s game.

He added that the atmosphere should be brilliant, with Leeds expecting to bring five-and-a-half thousand supporters.

Onto team news and North End could be without both Greg Cunningham and Captain Tom Clarke in defence, the pair suffering with calf injuries, but John Welsh has overcome his calf injury and is available for tomorrow’s match.

Goalkeeper Anders Lindegaard is another possible absentee after injuring his shoulder – Chris Kirkland will probably be brought in as a replacement.

Some positive news for PNE fans is that Chris Humphrey has regained enough fitness to be able to go into the first day of pre-season this summer whilst the same should also be guaranteed of Liam Grimshaw.

Striker Stevie May is unlikely to feature again for North End until later in the year after the knee injury he sustained.

As for the visitors, Evans almost has a full squad to choose from, excluding Middlesbrough loanee Mustapha Carayol, who will play no part in the final match for United.

PNE could jump two place into 9th if they pick up three points tomorrow whilst victory for Leeds would see them move on points with North End at the end of the season.
