Match report: Derby 2 PNE 1

Preston North End’s problems in front of goal continue, as Derby County’s first half brace earns all three points for the visitors.

The Lilywhites have so far only managed three goals in six Championship games; the third of which was Daniel Johnson’s consolation against the Rams.

Chris Martin opened the scoring, with a quick break from the away side ending with Johnny Russell’s superb cross finding Martin.

Martin then doubled Derby’s lead when he fired home from a well struck free-kick, after being brought down on the edge of the box by Huntington.

The away side had the edge for the most part of the first half, with the only real threat coming from a couple of half chances for PNE’s Johnson.

Early on in the second half North End started to take control of the game; with positive impacts being made by debutants Eion Doyle and Stevie May, who came on for Will Keane and Marnick Vermijl.

Joey Garner had the best chance of the half for PNE, as the forward’s shot hit the inside of the post after he rounded the keeper with 10 minutes of normal time to go.

Garner continued to cause headaches for the opposition, especially for Derby captain Chris Baird who was stretchered off late on after a clash of heads with last season’s top scorer.

North End did eventually find the net deep into added time, Daniel Johnson’s delicious curling effort from the edge of the box finally beating ‘keeper Lee Grant.
