Preston North End secured their first win of the pre-season, beating Bamber Bridge at the Sir Tom Finney Stadium.

Joe Garner scored Preston’s first from the penalty spot in the 19th minute before Jermaine Beckford doubled PNE’s lead just before the stroke of half-time.

Kyel Reid was also on the scoresheet with a 20-yard shot just after half-time before turning provider by supplying the cross which Jordan Hugill headed home.

Assistant manager Glynn Snodin said: “Another clean sheet and this time we got the goals as well, so yes it was a great night.”

Notable omissions from the PNE squad included Will Keane and Neil Kilkenny after both picked up knocks during the Chorley match on Saturday.

Brig’s Paul McKenna and Brett Ormerod started the match against their former employers with another ex-Preston player Jon Macken on the bench.

The hosts almost scored inside 11 minutes as Alistair Waddecar’s shot went skimming over the bar from 20 yards out.

PNE opened the scoring thanks to a penalty from Garner, Premier League referee Neil Swarbrick pointing to the spot after Garner took a high kick in the face.

Brig keeper Sam Dovey denied Beckford scoring a second goal, dashing off his line to smother the danger after Garner’s chipped ball split the opposition defence.

Just before half-time and North End doubled their lead, Callum Woods stinging the palms of Dovey from distance before Beckford followed up the rebound, guiding the ball into the net.

During half-time, PNE manager Simon Grayson decided to change nine players with just Jamie Jones and Ben Davies keeping their place.

49 minutes played and Preston found a third thanks to a thunderous strike from Reid 25 yards out after Bailey Wright picked out for the former Bradford City player.

Hugill rounded off a comfortable victory for PNE, steering Reid’s cross past Dovey and into the back of the net with just over 20 minutes left.
