League Two’s Carlisle United inflicted a first defeat of the pre-season for Preston North End at Brunton Park.

Preston opened up an early lead against the Cumbrians, after Jordan Hughill turned in a cross from Kyel Reid.

Keith Curle’s side drew level thanks to a Tom Miller header before Jason Kennedy raced past the PNE defence to put Carlisle ahead.

Approaching the half-hour mark and Will Keane drew PNE level only for Danny Grainger to put Carlisle back in front with a penalty kick in the 39th minute.

Preston equalised for a second time when Hugill bagged his second goal of the night early into the second half.

Carlisle seemed up against it when substitute Alexander McQueen was sent off but Grainger scored a second penalty to snatch a late victory for the home side.

PNE Manager Simon Grayson said: “Tonight we did okay with the ball but we didn’t do well enough without it. We didn’t stop the opposition from playing.”

Preston went ahead inside 11 minutes, Reid beating Kennedy with ease down the left before picking out Hugill, the striker guiding the ball into the net from close range.

Carlisle levelled somewhat fortuitously in the 20th minute, new boy Greg Cunningham clearing off the line before Bastien Hery’s cross was headed home by Miller.

Kennedy then put the home side in front, guiding the ball past Jamie Jones right into the bottom corner of the net, in the 26th minute.

Preston only trailed for two minutes, Hugill darting into the box before picking out Keane who despatched the ball from 12 yards.

Charlie Wyke was then bundled over by Bailey Wright, referee Richard Clark awarding the penalty kick which Grainger scored six minutes before half-time.

50 minutes played and PNE were back on level terms, Hugill beating Michael Raynes before bearing down on goal and slotting coolly past Hanford.

16 minutes later and Carlisle were reduced to ten men when McQueen lunged at Ben Davies, catching him above the ankle which saw referee Richard Clarke show red.

81 minutes played and Grainger secured victory for the Cumbrians, despatching another penalty kick after Steven Rigg was clipped by Jones as he took the ball round the PNE keeper.
