Preston North End began their pre-season with a goalless draw away to Chorley at Victory Park.
The two sides will share the Jack Kirkland Trophy for the first time ever after the game finished goalless.
First-team coach Steve Thompson said: “It’s important we get the legs up to speed for the games – it’s been a good shift. Chorley have been a good test for us.”
Joe Garner squandered Preston’s best chance missing from the penalty spot 15 minutes from full time after Chorley’s Sam Ashton clashed with the North End forward.
Jordan Hughill created the first opening for PNE charging down the left wing before finding a neat pass to set-up Jermaine Beckford.
The Lilywhites striker was bearing down on goal with just Ashton in his way, before poking a first-time shot narrowly wide of the post.
Then Chorley’s Harry Winter nearly put the home side ahead as his curling effort from 20 yards just edged past the post.
Just before the interval, PNE’s Will Keane almost scored a debut goal but his strike deflected up and over the bar.
After half-time, Preston rotated 10 players leaving keeper Jamie Jones on, whilst Chorley swapped nine – The hosts played the second half in their new lime green away kit.
Into the second half and Chorley’s Adam Dodd picked out the onrushing Jake Cottrell perfectly but the Magpies midfielder failed to control the ball quick enough and Jones gathered.
Garner then wasted a great opportunity from 10 yards heading the ball straight at Ashton following Nick Anderton’s pinpoint cross.
After 75 minutes Garner was the culprit once again striking a penalty kick against the bar after referee Scott Oldham adjudged Ashton to have brought the PNE striker down.
With just under ten minutes left, North End’s Paul Huntington almost broke the deadlock meeting Daniel Johnson’s corner with a volleyed effort but Ashton parried the ball away.
