Match Report: Football 4ths Lose On Penalties

The UCLan football 4th team lost out on penalties to the University of York after a 1-1 draw on Wednesday afternoon at the Sports Arena.
UCLAN made a bright start to the game, putting their visitors under immense pressure in the opening minutes. The pressure almost paid off for the hosts when midfielder Jach saw his effort smack the University of York’s bar before a relieved Hart, collected the ball.

Just moments later, the visitors were let off the hook once again as the UCLAN number 8 was in the thick of the action, this time striking the left hand post.

UCLAN’s Captain, Liam was doing everything he could to break the deadlock but time and time again he lacked the composure to find the killer ball to break a tight York defence.

But, just 5 minutes later the no. 10 put the home side in front, superbly volleying a cross from Jack. Hart had no time to react to the incredible effort fly past his net as the hosts were deservedly in front.

UCLAN almost doubled their advantage before the break, when playmaker Espie, and striker Jach both had their efforts blocked first by centre back Victor, and then by Hart. The men in blue were certainly living on the edge.

York then found their way back into the match, when midfielders Max and Sam started dictating the tempo for the visitors.

They almost found a leveller before the break, when striker Billy headed agonisingly wide from winger Josh’s curling delivery into the box.

At the other end, Ruben was a constant menace for the York defence. UCLAN’s Jack fed in the midfielder with a low cross into the penalty area only for the former to see his acrobatic effort tipped over the bar by Hart, who himself had a brilliant evening.

That was the last action of an entertaining first half with the hosts leading at the break.

UCLAN piled the pressure on after the interval and got their reward when Reuben was brought down unfairly in the penalty area after a mazy run through the York defence.

The number 3 stepped up to take the penalty he won, but failed to beat Hart from only 12 yards out in a match that looked to be slipping away from the hosts.

An otherwise uneventful second half meant that the tie was forced into penalties where York came out 4-1 victors to inflict a second consecutive defeat on their hosts.

Upon reflection UCLAN captain Liam said: “I thought we played really well. We were unlucky to lose especially after missing a penalty and hitting the bar.

“Looking back, we should have won the game and scored a few more but we won’t dwell on it. We have to continue working hard”
