North End suffered their second successive league defeat losing 2-0 to Hull City at the KC Stadium.

The Tigers went ahead somewhat fortuitously as Neil Kilkenny’s goal-line clearance struck Abel Hernandez and flew back over the line in the 37 minute.

Just under ten minutes remaining and Curtis Davies sealed the win for the home side, arrowing a shot straight past Jordan Pickford from close range.

Preston North End manager Simon Grayson said: “Unfortunately we’ve played well but we’ve not won the game, and I said last week I would take a scrappy 1-0 victory.”

PNE made an encouraging start as Chris Humphrey forced a good save from Allan McGregor, curling a shot towards goal which the Scotsman just managed to palm past the post.

On the half-hour mark and Moses Odubajo struck a powerful effort from outside the box which edged narrowly wide of the post.

37 minutes played and Hernandez broke the deadlock as Kilkenny cleared his shot off the line before the ball ricocheted back off the Hull forward and into the net.

Approaching the interval and Hernandez should have doubled his tally, hitting the ball too close to Pickford from 10 yards out following Michael Dawson’s deflected shot.

Into the second half, Johnson sprinted into space on the left of Hull’s box but his shot was deflected, flying straight into the hands of McGregor.

Around the hour mark and Joe Garner got on the end of Paul Gallagher’s cross, but his header was claimed in the nick of time by McGregor.

Bailey Wright’s back-pass was pounced upon by Chuba Akpom but Pickford was proactive in his approach, smothering the ball and averting the danger.

74 minutes played and Alan Browne almost found the equalizer for North End, meeting Gallagher’s cross before glancing his header narrowly over the bar from six-yards out.

Eight minutes later and Davies secured all three points for the hosts, striking a powerful volley from close range, leaving Pickford with no chance.
