Jordan Hugill’s goal ensured that Preston North End beat Wigan Athletic 1-0 in a tight Lancashire Derby at Deepdale.
Hugill gave PNE the lead in the 8th minute after deflecting in Aiden McGeady’s shot from the edge of the area.
The visitors improved after the goal and came close to levelling the game shortly after through Will Grigg who headed just over the goal.
The Lilywhites continued to be pressed back into their own half but defended well to deny the Latics any clear cut chances.
Just before half-time Wigan had their best chance of the half when Grigg flicked the ball to Gomez who shot wide from the edge of the area.
In the second half, Hugill was through on goal but his low curling effort was saved by Adam Bogdan.
The hosts had another chance to double their lead shortly after when Tom Clarke headed wide from Paul Gallagher’s cross.
At the other end Tom Byrne came agonisingly close to equalising for the Latics.
He forced Chris Maxwell into a low save before hitting the post on the rebound.
PNE also pressed for goals and came close through McGeady who shot wide from distance.
Despite some late pressure by the visitors, the Lilywhites held on to secure all three points.
The win saw North End move up to 17th place in the Championship table whilst the visitors stay in 22nd place ahead of tomorrow’s fixtures.
