Eoin Doyle and Jordan Hugill secured a 2-0 win for PNE over Oldham Athletic and their place in the third round of the EFL Cup.
Simon Grayson made six changes from the weekend’s impressive win at QPR but it didn’t make much difference for the home side as they took control of the game from the early stages.
The first half was fairly lacklustre but the game’s best chances came from Ben Pringle free-kicks before he was forced off midway through the first half with a knock.
Twice the midfielder swung the ball in towards Jordan Hugill who rose above the rest but he couldn’t capitalise on the chances.
The first was a header directed straight at the goalkeeper but the second forced him in to get down extremely well and keep the scoreline level.
The second half was more lively; Alan Browne was set up by a lovely knock down from Simon Makienok but he dragged his shot wide of the post.
Debutant goalie Chris Maxwell was then called in to action for the first time in the Preston goal as Lee Erwin powered an effort towards goal which Maxwell was able to palm away.
A long ball down field to Jordan Hugill was flicked out to the left towards Greg Cunningham and the defender managed to find Doyle in the area who controlled, was composed and rolled the ball in to the corner and past the goalkeeper.
The game was killed off as it became 2-0 nine minutes from time, Doyle pressured goalkeeper Ripley and was able to nick the ball out wide before delivering in to Hugill who was able to head in to an empty net.
