PNE twice fought back against Bournemouth but were knocked out of the Capital One Cup after the Lilywhites lost 2-3 on penalties.
Bournemouth took the lead in the 23rd minute when MacDonald scored with a looping header over Jordan Pickford.
PNE scored a dramatic equaliser in the 84th minute as substitute Jordan Hugill headed in from a Greg Cunningham cross.
With the scores level after 90 minutes the game went to extra time where Bournemouth quickly went ahead. Former PNE loanee Josh King saw his shot deflected and into the path of Pugh who put Bournemouth ahead.
In the dying moments of the game PNE won a penalty for a handball which was calmly slotted away by Daniel Johnson.
Keane and Reid netted for PNE whilst Hugill, Browne and Johnson all saw their penalties saved by Federici. Whilst Pickford saved Gosling’s penalty, he was unable to stop Stanislas, Cook and Pugh from firing Bournemouth into the Capital One Cup 4th Round.
On another day both sides could have scored more with May and Clarke hitting the side netting for PNE. Despite his mistake for the first goal, Pickford was impressive between the sticks including a double save from Lee Tomlin in extra time which would have put Bournemouth 3-1 up.
Overall it was a much improved display from the second half performance at Brentford where they threw away a 1-0 lead to lose 2-1.
Simon Grayson said: “They showed a lot of character and worked extremely hard and showed all of the things that we asked of them after the weekend with that second-half performance.
He added: “I’m pleased with them and disappointed to go out but if you’re going to lose a game and respond after a disappointing performance that was the way to do it tonight.”
