PNE extended their unbeaten run in the league, playing out a goalless draw against Rotherham at the New York Stadium.

The night belonged to Kelle Roos and Jordan Pickford in the main; both keepers were determined not to be beat.

Rotherham’s Matt Derbyshire spurned the chance of the game, collecting the ball from Lewis Buxton before blazing his shot wide with 13 minutes played.

Preston North End manager Simon Grayson said: “it’s another point for us and another clean sheet and an opportunity for the players to grow in confidence at another positive result.”

The hosts made the better start, Buxton showing some neat footwork to evade Greg Cunningham before finding Derbyshire, but the Millers forward pulled his shot wide.

Moments later, Joe Newell skipped past several North End midfielders but couldn’t quite pick out Derbyshire, who was lurking in the box.

Tom Clarke’s dangerous cross almost found Cunningham at the back post but Roos showed good reactions, jumping high to deny the defender.

Joe Garner came the closest to beating Roos in the Rotherham goal, his low shot from distance arrowed straight at the Dutchman.

PNE were presented with another chance when Rotherham captain Greg Halford fouled Daniel Johnson, for which he conceded a free-kick and was booked.

But Paul Gallagher failed to capitalize on Halford’s carelessness, his effort directed straight into the hands of the grateful Roos.

49 minutes played and Garner thought he had directed Clarke’s cross past Roos and into the back of the net but Joe Mattock scrambled the ball off the line.

Six minutes later and Will Keane found himself with time and space on the edge of the box but rifled his shot over the bar.

Just after the hour mark and John Welsh looked to have conceded a penalty when he brought down Aidy White but the referee awarded a free-kick just outside the box.

The home team were still unable to beat Pickford, the loanee keeper punching the subsequent set-piece away from his goal.

Substitute Jonson Clarke-Harris was a constant menace entering the final stages but he lacked the composure to trouble Pickford, the Rotherham striker dragging his shot wide.

Bailey Wright almost found the opening goal in the 77th minute, his header colliding with the bar following Gallagher’s corner.

Six minutes before the end of normal time and substitute Neil Kilkenny almost snatched victory with a curling effort but Roos was there to divert the ball past the post.
