Sheffield snatched all three points with a last gasp winner beating the UCLan 1st football team 2-1.
UCLan equalised with only minutes remaining and a point for the home side looked certain but Albert Davies was the hero for Sheffield scoring the goal that sealed the win.
It was a scrappy first half hour with both teams not really testing either goalkeeper.
The away team took the lead from a free kick. A good delivery from King found Ernest unmarked in the area who headed past McCarthy to put them 1-0 up.
Two minutes later UCLan should’ve been level. McGroaty cut inside and struck an effort which deflected and fell to Cummings who only had to tap in but the ball bounced unkindly for the striker and the keeper was there to save.
Sheffield 1st seemed very dangerous from set pieces. With three minutes to go before half time King whipped in another free kick to find Ernest unmarked again but McCarthy stood tall and saved his header.
In the second half the game opened up and chances started flowing for both teams. Sheffield’s Saxon weaved through the UCLan defence however he didn’t have the calmness to double their lead and his shot went wide.
With 72 minutes played UCLan countered brilliantly. Pons held the ball up and found Yates who hit a shot on target but the Sheffield keeper made a good save.
10 minutes later UCLan really went searching for an equaliser. Chu broke with the ball and picked out Pons in space on the left. The winger burst forward and took a shot which cannoned off the post and was cleared.
Four minutes of injury time gave the home team a lifeline. The equaliser eventually came. A long throw was held up well by Chu who laid off Jheeta, he controlled the ball and finessed an effort into the far right corner. A point looked valuable for UCLan now.
However, with the last attack of the game Sheffield broke away and Davies carried the ball 40 yards and unleashed a low driving strike into the bottom left corner from outside the area. This was surely all three points secure now.
