UCLan Rams won their first home game of the season after inspired performances by Adam Bamber and Ramon Harwood.
The Rams were looking to get back to winning ways after losing two consecutive home games to Sheffield Hallam and Leeds Beckett.
In the early stages of the game it was the Rams defence who showed a positive start dominating the Sabres offensive line and limiting their yardage.
With the Rams forcing an early turnover in the game, running back Chris Littler showed great footwork and movement to gain some good yardage, as the offensive line opened up some space for him as their attack started to show promise.
The Rams would soon reap the rewards of a strong offence as QB Josh Mills threw a looping ball over the Sabres defence to be caught by Bamber to give the rams the lead. The resulting PAT by Mills was charged down and blocked.
The Rams very nearly got a 2nd touchdown a few minutes later as Bamber made fantastic movement and space to stroll in for the touchdown but it was ruled out for holding.
Mills continued to excel in his throwing as he threw a lovely 28 yard pass for it to be caught by Bamber for the Rams 2nd touchdown. Mills then converted the subsequent PAT.
With the Rams in good control of the game they eased their way for a third touchdown. As Bamber once again continued to put the accelerator’s on as he showed great speed and awareness to run the ball into the End zone through the Sabres defence.
Quarterback Mills then followed up to covert his 2nd PAT of the game.
As the second half got under the Rams found themselves even further ahead. Mills showed off his fantastic throwing once again by launching a 60-yard pass up the field to be caught by Max Mottershead to drive away from 2 defenders for the touchdown. QB Mills then got his 3rd PAT of the fixture.
Great communication between defensive trio Harwood, Jacob Mangham and Yu Joe Lewis Lai was key to the driving force of the Rams defence, as they kept on taking down Sabres attack’s not allowing for them to get anywhere near the Rams end zone.
Bamber completed a quadruple of touchdowns the most a Rams player has ever got in one fixture, as he ran an incredible 70 yards after a great block from Running back Tyler Browne to advance all the way to the end zone. QB Mills also got his quadruple of PAT’s.
Mills then wrapped the game up in its latter stages, as he showed great tactical awareness to run into the gap of the Sabres defence to run right across the defensive line into open space to get his first touchdown of the game. With his resulting two point attempt failing.
Bamber spoke about his four touchdowns stating that “it’s the most amazing feeling to get four touchdowns, it’s the most I’ve ever had.”
Harwood also spoke about the impressive defensive line after no points were conceded by the Rams stating that “it feels good, we seemed to play as a team and a lot of hard work was put across the field”.
“It was a timely win and it gets our confidence and moral up” Harwood concluded.
