The 2nds have made a stuttering start to their league campaign but came back fighting last week against Glyndwr with a 5-1 victory. On a dull day at the Sports Arena UCLan looked to overcome Leeds to reach the quarter finals of the cup.
UCLan made a great start to the match and Molloy encapsulated this start by giving the right back of Leeds a torrid time with a mazy dribble down the left wing. He cut inside onto his right foot and whipped the ball just past the right hand post.
Ten minutes later Molloy was at it again but to greater effect by cutting inside onto his right foot and shot from 20 yards into the top right hand corner. The goal gave the team great confidence and they continued to pile the pressure on Leeds with Kelly dragging wide and Whitley being denied by the opposition keeper, tipping his shot onto the post and out for a corner.
In the 38th minute UCLan had their 7th corner of the match and were again unable to further their lead. Molloy continued his man of the match performance just before half time but took too long in deciding whether to shoot or square the ball to Kelly after dribbling into the box and was smothered by the Leeds goalkeeper.
After the break the match became slightly heated with the Leeds winger squaring up to Dunroe and Kimona given a talking to over two similar challenges. In contrast to the off the ball incidents there were few chances to speak of in the second half.
A disallowed goal from a Kelly long throw that went straight into the goal without a touch from anyone was the highlight of the second half. UCLan weren’t complaining though because the goal in the first half was enough to send them through to the quarter finals of the cup.
