UCLan Mens 5th secured a 2-1 victory against Dearne Valley College Mens 1st thanks to a double by striker Sam Shobande.
After a tense and tight first half, UCLan started the second half strongly with Sam Shobande breaking the deadlock in the 58th minute with a superb finish.
Dearne Valley equalised via a free kick and with the game looking like it was heading towards a draw, Sam Shobande struck again in the 89th minute with the winning goal.
The captain of the 5ths Jack Price said: “It was a really good performance and I’m really proud of the lads. We put in a lot of hard work, it was a very tough game and a very strong opponent that we played.”
He also had to add that: “To get that final goal in the last couple of minutes, especially from someone who has been struggling to score all pre-season it’s a pretty proud moment. I think we can build on this and go on to win the season”
With chances few and far between in the first half the tension boiled over with Lucas Thornley involved in a couple of disputes with the opposition team. Liam Vickery looked dangerous on the left wing but the sides headed into halftime with score at 0-0.
The first of Sam Shobande’s goals was a sublime finish from the edge of the box after a great through ball from Lucas Thornley. The Dearne Valley number 3 equalised in the 68th minute from a free kick on the edge of the UCLan area. Sam Shobande struck again in the dying moments of the game with a cheeky chip over the Dearne Valley goalkeeper with sparked wild celebrations.
