The men’s football 4ths’ cup run is over after coming up short away at Liverpool in the Northern Conference Plate.
The game started in typical cup tie fashion with chances for both sides early on.
UCLan 4ths’ top scorer George Kelly struck the post in the fourth minute before firing the rebound wide.
Liverpool also had their fair share of chances throughout the first half but nothing posed too much of a challenge for UCLan goalkeeper Rob Charles-Jones.
The match was nicely poised at half-time and both teams were pleased with their first half performances.
Into the second half, Liverpool’s Tom Young ghosted past UCLan skipper Luke Rathbone before supplying the cross which Sam Graham unfortunately turned into his own net.
As the away side tried to get back into the game, the defence opened up and the hosts went two in front after a spectacular free kick from Fraser Benjamin-Child.
UCLan threw bodies up to try and save the game and Lewis Ray had multiple headers from corners cleared off the line.
The 4ths’ misery was furthered after Liverpool’s Brazilian playmaker Ricardo made it 3-0 with a sumptuous curled finish.
After the game, UCLan defender Sam Graham said he was “devastated” over the result and apologized for scoring the own goal that gave the hosts the lead.
UCLan will be hoping for a more successful result in Merseyside next week when they face the University of Liverpool 4ths in the BUCS league.
