A double by Julian Lopez as well as goals from Matt Geldard and Liam Cassidy for UCLan men’s 1sts were cancelled out by a resurgent Liverpool John Moores 1st side in a classic at UCLan Sports Arena.
Following lots of early pressure, UCLan broke the deadlock with a well worked opener down the right of the D from Lopez.
The hosts quickly doubled their lead when Geldard knocked the ball down above the goalkeeper from close range.
At this point UCLan’s lead was fully deserved and it seemed they were on the way to a big victory.
However, within seconds of the restart LJM got one back, scoring with their first real attack of the match.
Eight minutes into the second half, Cassidy stepped up to score a penalty to make it 3-1 after the ball was blocked on the line by the foot of a defender.
LJM applied the pressure and forced UCLan’s goalkeeper to make some excellent saves.
A game changing moment occurred when Phil Grey tripped a player off the ball and was given a three minute green card.
Within those three minutes LJM amazingly clawed themselves back level with two quick goals.
With UCLan back to the full eleven, they then regained the lead moments later from a short corner, Lopez getting his second of the day.
Lopez won a penalty flick in the dying moments of the game but the LJM goalkeeper denied Cassidy a second of the game.
Within seconds of the saved penalty, LJM scored a dramatic equaliser to end a remarkable second half.
Cassidy said post-match: “As the result goes, we’re fairly disappointed.”
However, he later added: “It’s a good improvement, as the league table goes it was a good result for us. But on the day I feel we could have had that extra goal.”
