Maybe technology hasn’t yielded hover boards, flying cars or drone dog walkers as of yet but that isn’t to say we don’t have anything to commemorate the global celebration that happened on Wednesday.
On October 21st 1989 Marty (Michael J. Fox) and the Doc (Christopher Lloyd) travelled to 2015 and now, 26 years later we have a piece of memorabilia we can show from their trip. In honour of Back to the Future day, Nike celebrated by releasing the iconic self-lacing Air Mag trainers sported by the one and only Marty McFly. Great Scott!
To mark the day even further, Nike designer Tinker Hatfield sent Michael J. Fox the very first pair of these shoes along with a heart-warming letter stating that “although the project started as science fiction, we’re now proud to turn that fiction into fact…we wanted you to be the first to receive a living pair”, he later shared this on Twitter.
Fox, who has Parkinson’s disease tweeted a picture of himself and the shoes through his foundation account before releasing a video of him trying the shoes on for the first time.
Although fans have had the opportunity to view the shoes via social media, they will have to wait to own a pair as they will only be released next year during spring and only be sold through auctioning.
The proceeds they make from the shoes will go towards the Michael J. Fox Foundation for Parkinson’s Research.
