Preston named as the city with the highest suicide rate

A shocking statistic about Preston has emerged in new figures regarding suicide.

According to the Office of National Statistics, Preston has the highest suicide rate in the UK compared to other towns and cities, with statistics ranging from the period of 2012-2014.

There are nearly 19 suicides each year, including students, in the city per 100,000 people, it also highlights the suicide rate in Preston has been rising sharply in the last few years.

Middlesbrough – 17.6
Hastings – 17.4
Blackpool – 17
Warwick – 16.6

“I was extremely shocked to hear this, as you don’t really see much stuff in the media. I’m hoping that the university can work towards making student support more accessible and known to students, and that proactive measures are taken to help students and prevent any student suicides.”
