UCLan’s very own writing competition is here.
By Elsa Carron
As part of a Live Literature module, second year Literature and Creative Writing students are organising a short story competition for UCLan students, staff and alumni.
Appropriately for this year’s beautiful lunar and solar eclipses, The Red Rose Science Fiction and Fantasy Competition calls for stories themed around an eclipse. The deadline is January 15, 2016 at 5 pm. You have the entire Christmas holidays and then some to write between 500 and 3000 words.
So get writing!
The competition is the perfect opportunity for anyone interested in writing. Winning entries will receive a book token, an extract published on UCLan’s website and the possibility of being published in an eBook in partnership with uclanpublishing, UCLan’s publishing press.
Last year’s Red Rose competition centred around the theme of the Great War. 2014 competition winners were Student Winner Irene Flack for ‘The Bystanders’, Staff Winner Dawne Gurbutt for ‘English Oak’, Alumni Winner Jennifer Walker for ‘English Breakfast’, and Lecturer’s Choice Emily Birkett for ‘Of Pride and Prejudice’.
You can read extracts from the 2014 winning entries here.
This year’s competition is being run by Becky Mahon (Literature and Creative Writing), Euan Dover (Literature and Creative Writing), Michael Newton (Literature and Creative Writing) , Jamie Mcclymont (Literature), and their project leader Alice Hudson (Literature and Creative Writing). Both competitions are part of the Live Literature module run by Dr Helen Day, which also produced Preston’s first comic/fantasy/sci-fi convention Talk Nerdy to Me.
Don’t forget to check out the full submission guidelines, which include more tips on what to write, facts about eclipses, different types of science fiction and fantasy subgenres, and (just as important) how to format your submissions.
