[REVIEW] The Vaults – One Day I’ll Fly Away

Ashleigh Clarke

The eagerly anticipated Christmas advert by John Lewis is finally here!

While it does what it’s supposed too, the song is what really gets people into the Christmas spirit. ‘One Day I’ll Fly Away’ is a classic song, famously sang by Randy Crawford and if you’re like me, know it through being featured in ‘Moulin Rouge’. The Vaults own cover of the song is enchanting, and Pepino’s vocals literally soar from word to word.

While it still holds that traditional and powerful style, this interpretation is more modern and festive, which bolds well with the advert. By including a 70-piece choir and 66-piece orchestra, the song physically comes to life, grabs you by the hand and takes you on a journey over snowy mountain tops and icy lakes.

Made up of Blythe Pepino, Ben Vella and Barney Freeman, the three piece London trio have shot up from being the biggest unsigned band in the UK to the most acclaimed performances at festivals such as Glastonbury and Latitude. With their sound focusing more on ‘introspective electronica’, it’s refreshing to see their confidence when taking on new styles of music and adding their own twist to it.

The band have recently performed at Radio 1 and seem to be smashing it so far, I definitely can’t wait to hear more from them!
