Preston North End’s eight game unbeaten run came to an end this afternoon after a 3-0 defeat at Rochdale.
Manager Simon Grayson only made one change to the team that started against Leyton Orient in midweek.
Tom Clarke returned to the squad after missing out on the games against Gillingham and Fleetwood through illness, though he was a second half substitute in last Tuesday’s win at Brisbane Road.
On loan Blackburn defender Jack O’Connell put Dale ahead in the 28th minute as he headed in a Scott Tanser free-kick to score his second goal in as many games.
The home side looked to be the most comfortable as striker Ian Henderson doubled their lead in the 32nd minute after a shot from six yards out.
Kevin Davies was brought on for Aston Villa loanee Callum Robinson at half time, though the change didn’t prove as significant as it did last weekend.
Rochdale stepped on the gas again in the second half as Matty Done scored from a spilt ball by Jamie Jones, gifting the winger his ninth goal of the season.
It looked to be one of those days as North End only managed 2 shots on target all game, and after Joe Garner’s penalty was saved in the 76th minute by Dale keeper Conrad Logan, it didn’t seem as though the Lilywhites were going to recover.
The Lilywhite’s will have hoped to give their fans something to cheer about, after a commendable 2844 fans travelled to the Spotland in the hope of seeing Preston go top of the league one table.
The result sees Rochdale move up to fourth in the league table whilst Preston stay second, five points behind leaders Bristol City, though North End will be hoping to bounce back from this result as attention turns to the Swindon Town game on Tuesday evening.
