Matty Dawe scored another hat-trick of tries as UCLan Rugby Union 2nds won a tight contest against Chester Warrington 1st XV at the UCLan Sports Arena.
It was not a dominant UCLan display, with the first 15 minutes of the game a very cagey affair with both sides trying to assert their dominance.
UCLan had more territory; Olly Stables and Andy Milne tried to force their way through a resilient Warrington defence. A quick turn over resulted in a punt down field and quick hands following a Warrington line-out saw the visitors go close to scoring in the corner, but they failed to take advantage of an overlap and UCLan full-back Jack Morgan stole the ball to keep Warrington at bay.
For the next 10 minutes UCLan struggled to get out of their own half. An attempted kick to touch was charged down by and Warrington again failed to capitalise in an advantageous position.
The game finally had its first score with 5 minutes until half time. Against the run of play, Dawe got the ball down after strong play from the UCLan forwards. Fly-half Dan Birkbeck was left with a simple conversion.
Dawe’s second try came after another great run from deep, and UCLan had a 14-0 lead at half-time.
With the first-half a few minutes old, Dawe had his second hat-trick in as many games as he touched down under the posts. From here UCLan began to dominate proceedings, with Harry Matthews aggressive in attack and Milne was held up on the try-line.
Matthew Farrer then made it 26-0 with an hour played, managing to force his way through a number of Warrington forwards, but the conversion was missed.
In the final 10 minutes, Warrington got 2 consolation tries as the game finished 26-12.
UCLan’s play Warrington again next week, away in the Northern Conference Plate.
