Social Work Student Passes Away

By Sam Johnson - Head of PR & Social Media

Pluto has received news that recently a student of The University of Central Lancashire has sadly passed away. Dionne Caldwell was a second year BA Social Work student who died on 16th May 2016. Dionne (Dee) was studying in Preston after taking her first year in Kendal.

One of her work placement supervisors said that Dionne had really positive and respectful relationships with service users and showed real understanding and patience, genuinely empowering the people she supported.

Jez Buffin, acting Head of School of Social Work, Care & Community said,

“She was determined and dedicated to becoming an effective and empathic social worker. She had an immense enthusiasm for learning, a positive outlook on life and encouraged others.”

Dionne’s mother has said that any students or staff who knew Dionne are welcome at her funeral which is taking place tomorrow (Friday 27 May) at 11.00am at St. Matthew’s Church, Harrogate Street, Barrow-in-Furness. She said that it would be a celebration of her life. Rather than bringing flowers, donations can be made at the church to the Samaritans with who Dionne had worked for many years.

Pluto sends out its condolences to the family and friends of Dionne. For anybody who is struggling with this news it has been encouraged by senior members of staff to seek support from your academic advisor or alternatively you can contact the UCLan Counselling Service.
