Home Secretary Theresa May has emerged as a potential candidate for Leader of the Conservative Party. May, who is pro-EU but at the same time highly critical of the union, is seen as a unifying candidate between Eurosceptics and Europhiles within the Conservatives.

Of the possible candidates, May is the only one to have held one of the four ‘Great Offices of State’:

  • Prime Minister
  • Chancellor of the Exchequer
  • Home Secretary
  • Foreign Secretary

May also boasts being the longest serving Home Secretary in over a century, which her supporters claim makes her unparalleled in qualification for the role.

A source close to David Cameron said:

“There is a special place in hell reserved for Boris. We need to get behind Theresa. She’s the grown up.”
