A Conservative Councillor on Guildford Borough Council has launched a petition on the Parliamentary Petitions website calling for suport of the European Union to be added to the list of foreign powers specified under the Treason Felony Act, making the act of being pro-EU an act of treason punishable by life in prison. The petition reads:
The Treason Felony Act be amended to include the following offences:
‘To imagine, devise, promote, work, or encourage others, to support UK becoming a member of the European Union;
To conspire with foreign powers to make the UK, or part of the UK, become a member of the EU.’
Holliday, who is a substitute member for Guildford’s Executive Scrutiny Committee – the body tasked with scrutinising the Lead Councillors – has, at time of writing, received over 1,400 signatures on his petition, including one within the Preston constituency.
The petition continues to read,
It is becoming clear that many politicians and others are unwilling to accept the democratic decision of the British people to leave the EU. Brexit must not be put at risk in the years and decades ahead. For this reason we the undersigned request that the Treason Felony Act be amended as set out in this petition.
If the petition receives over 10,000 signatures, the Government will respond, and if 100,000 signatures are gathered, there will be a debate held in Westminster Hall in the House of Commons.
