A UCLan graduate has been named the Sports Photographer of the Year for 2014 at the Picture Editors’ Guild annual awards.
Simon Stacpoole entered the competition with a folio of five images based on the emotions surrounding football.
His photos focused on his time at the 2014 World Cup, as well his work in the Premier League and Champions League.
The 31 year old collected his award, one of 10 to be won, at a ceremony at the Honourable Artillery Company Headquarters in London designed to celebrate the best photojournalism in the UK.
Mr Stacpoole is a freelance photographer who graduated his photography course in Preston in 2005.
He spoke to UCLan after the event: “To fend off competition from photographers associated with national newspapers as well as international wire agencies was an extraordinary achievement, and one I’m incredibly proud of.”
