UCLan’s Rugby Union 1st’s got off to a perfect start in their bid for the Northern 2A Rugby Union title.
Edge Hill were the visitors to the UCLan Sports Arena, but they were unable to score a single point, as the UCLan defence stayed strong and would not let them through.
At the other end of the pitch, tries were going in left, right and centre, with 50 points being ran up by UCLan.
Jonny Wesley started the scoring with a 10th minute penalty, before Corey Logan went over twice before the half hour mark, both time touching down under the posts to make the conversions easy for Wesley.
Finn Mulholland squeezed over on his debut for the 1st team, right on the half time whistle, and with another Wesley conversion, UCLan had a 24-0 lead at the break.
By the 53rd minute, UCLan had scored twice more, with the first coming through Jack “Prince” Barker, known as the “Prince of Rugby” by his teammates.
Ben Rhodes-Powers then got in on the act, by being the first onto a loose ball and kicking it towards the try line before bundling it over to make it 38-0, with the help of Jonny Wesley, with yet another conversion.
With 15 minutes to go, Wesley then went over for a try in the left corner, thanks to great work in the pack. Ed Evans then rounded off the game late on with a fantastic kick and chase from 60-odd yards out to make the score 56-0.
Logan and Wesley were both contenders for man of the match, but it went to the Irishman, whose two first half tries set the game up for UCLan.
