Students from UCLan have received the main roles in a new production of ‘Rent’.

Musical Theatre graduate Rebecca Duckworth and current third year Sam Thomas have bagged the lead roles in rock musical RENT.

Rent is loosely based on Giacomo Puccini’s opera La bohème. It tells the story of a group of impoverished young artists struggling to survive and create a life in New York City.

Rebecca plays the role of Mimi Marquez, an exotic dancer at the Cat Scratch Club who is HIV+, and Sam plays Tom Collins who is the love interest to Angel, a transgender woman. Like Mimi, Tom had AIDS.

The musical originally opening in 1996 it went on to become one of the longest running shows to ever win a tony award for ‘best musical’.

UCLan acting student Chris Campbell is also directing the musical which will be on show from September 9th-12th at the Lowther Pavilion in Lytham.
