Pluto have received confirmation that UCLan’s Rugby Union club have been punished following a Students’ Union investigation into an incident at Popworld last Wednesday.
After the results of the investigation were presented to him, Students’ Union President Ben Latham issued the following sanctions:
1. That the members of the club committee be removed from their positions of authority, and not be allowed to assume any officer role in any Union club or society for the remainder of the season (until May).
2. That these committee members not be allowed to represent UCLan in any fixtures in that time period.
3. That the teams be withdrawn from the Cup Competition, and that the club incurs any costs relating to such forfeiture.
Pluto exclusively revealed that police were called to the nightclub after a social the club was on got out of hand. There have been rumours that the social was actually an initiation, something that is banned, but the Rugby Union club have strongly denied this.
However, a statement from the Student Union said: “The report provided evidence which confirmed many elements of the initial police report which is that members of the club participated in an ‘initiation’ event contrary to the Unions rules.
“When affiliating the club to the Union, the committee signed an agreement which outlined the expected conduct of members, with specific mentions of how initiation ceremonies will not be tolerated. The reported incidents show a clear breach of this agreement and that the committee’s actions were highly irresponsible.
“There was, however, no evidence to suggest that any members of the club were coerced into taking part in any events against their own will.”
The Rugby Union club are planning to appeal the sanctions, with a petition already online. They have until 25 November to submit their appeal.
