UCLan’s hockey women’s 1sts started their new season in style against the University of Manchester 3rds.
The game took a while to get going, however it was UCLan’s 1sts who took the initiative with a first half goal from Ellie Selley which helped settle the nerves.
Manchester pushed for an equaliser before the break but UCLan’s defence proved to be too good.
The second half started with a bang as Manchester managed to get an equaliser four minutes in. UCLan showed great character to immediately regain the lead with Ruby Wilson finishing well.
After a scrappy period, Libby Aitcheson scored UCLan’s third, following a great run and showing persistence to find herself in the D to score the goal.
Almost instantly, woman of the match, Eleanor Vials scored a brilliant fourth to seal the game once and for all and cap off a great start to the season.
Captain Sophie Taylor was delighted to start the new season with a win and predicted this season was going to be a good one.
“I’m really impressed with the performance from the girls. It’s a new team and I’m really impressed with how well we worked together as a squad.”
“With the strength of the squad, we should really be challenging for the top place.”
A positive start for the UCLan women’s hockey 1sts and they’ll be looking to continue making good progress with a win next week away against Salford 1sts.
